Clicklist Beer Buying: Is It Possible?

Kroger customers in the Richmond and Roanoke Valley areas can now buy beer and wine through ClickList, the grocery's online ordering service. This comes after a change in Virginia ABC rules, which now allows anyone with a beer or wine license to deliver alcohol in closed containers for off-premises consumption to a person's vehicle if located in a designated parking area. Kroger's Mid-Atlantic division e-commerce manager, Adam Coleman, said: We’ve had requests from customers to offer alcoholic beverages since we introduced ClickList in 2016. With this update in technology and a change in Virginia law, we’ve responded to customers.

Kroger customers can buy beer through ClickList

Kroger customers can now buy beer and wine through ClickList, the grocery chain's online ordering and pickup service. This means customers can order beer and other groceries online and have them delivered straight to their vehicles.

The service is available to Kroger customers in the Richmond and Roanoke Valley areas, as well as Spartan Square in Salem. In Richmond, 13 out of 18 Kroger stores offer ClickList, while in Roanoke Valley, seven stores offer the service.

Kroger began offering ClickList in 2016 and has now expanded to include alcoholic beverages, following a change in Virginia law. The law now permits the delivery of alcohol to customers' vehicles, provided the order was placed online in advance and the vehicle is parked in a designated area.

Candace Bingham, a division e-commerce field specialist with Kroger's Mid-Atlantic Division, said: "We carry a full variety of beer and wine. [...] We’ve had requests from customers to offer alcoholic beverages since we introduced ClickList in 2016. With this update in technology and a change in Virginia law, we’ve responded to customers."

Beer and wine are available for pickup or delivery

Beer and wine can be ordered through ClickList in nearly all Kroger stores in the Mid-Atlantic division, including Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In the Richmond area specifically, 13 out of 18 Kroger stores offer ClickList.

To order beer and wine through ClickList, customers can go to www.kroger.com/ClickList and search for beer or wine, or enter specific brands. Customers can then select a time for pickup, with orders requiring a minimum of four hours' notice. Orders must be picked up at designated ClickList parking spaces, and customer identification is checked at the time of pickup.

The addition of beer and wine to ClickList is a response to customer requests since the service was introduced in 2016. The change was made possible by an update in technology and a change in Virginia law, which now permits the delivery of alcohol to customers' vehicles in designated parking areas when ordered in advance.

Kroger ClickList is available in Richmond, Roanoke Valley and Salem

Kroger ClickList is now available in Richmond, Roanoke Valley and Salem. The service allows customers to place orders online and pick them up on the same day, without having to go into the store. Orders must be placed at least four hours in advance and can be made up to three days ahead.

ClickList was first introduced in Spartan Square, Salem, in July 2024, with the service previously available in Bonsack, Roanoke County. It has since expanded to other locations in the Roanoke Valley, including Vinton, Lakeside Plaza in Salem, Cave Spring Corners in southwest Roanoke County, and West Salem.

Kroger's online ordering service has proven popular, with the Bonsack store, which was the first in the region to offer ClickList, receiving customers from outside the area, including from Salem. The success of ClickList in this store led to its expansion to Spartan Square in Salem, which was chosen due to its location on the opposite end of the Roanoke Valley. The introduction of ClickList in Spartan Square created 25 new jobs.

Nearly all beer and wine offered in a Kroger store are available on ClickList, which is approximately 1,000 items at each store. Customers can place their orders by visiting www.kroger.com/ClickList and searching for beer or wine. Specific brands can also be entered.

It is important to note that Virginia law prohibits the sale of tobacco products and pharmacy prescriptions on ClickList. Hot foods and gift cards are also excluded from the service.
