The history of Moosehead beer
Moosehead Breweries Limited, the maker of Moosehead Canadian Lager, is Canada's oldest independent brewery. It was founded in 1867 by Susannah Oland, who brewed beer in her backyard and shared it with her community. The popularity of her October Brown Ale led to the birth of the Turtle Grove Brewery (incorporated as John Oland and Son) in 1867. After the unexpected death of her husband, Susannah and her sons secured support from investors, including Captain Francis Walter DeWinton, to keep the brewery going. It was renamed the Army & Navy Brewery, in honour of its principal patrons.
Susannah Oland was a determined woman who, after receiving an inheritance from a relative in England, bought out her investors and renamed the brewery S. Oland, Sons & Co. However, tragedy struck again when a fire broke out, gutting the main building. Unfazed, Susannah rebuilt a larger brewery on the same site.
After Susannah's death, control of the brewery passed to her youngest son, George W.C. Oland. The business faced several challenges, including the Temperance Movement, impending prohibition, and fires. George sold the brewery to a British syndicate but stayed on as a manager. He later purchased the Highland Spring Brewery in Halifax, renaming it Oland and Son Brewery.
In 1917, the Halifax Explosion killed six brewery workers and Susannah's son, Conrad, and destroyed the brewery. George used insurance money and explosion compensation to purchase the Red Ball Brewery in Saint John, New Brunswick. His oldest son, George B., ran the brewery while he and his son Sidney rebuilt the brewery in Halifax.
The Oland family's business continued to grow, and after purchasing the James Ready Brewery, the name "Moosehead" was discovered in the company's records, inspiring the creation of Moosehead Pale Ale. George B. officially renamed the brewery Moosehead Breweries Limited, recognising Canadians' love for the iconic symbol of the moose.
Moosehead has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including devastating fires, Prohibition, the Great Depression, two world wars, obstructive trade barriers, and competition from larger breweries. Despite these obstacles, the Oland family's passion for beer has helped steer Moosehead towards success, making it a beloved Canadian icon.
