It is America's oldest brewery
D.G. Yuengling & Son, established in 1829, is America's oldest brewery. German immigrant David Gottlieb Jüngling founded the company after anglicising his surname to Yuengling. The company was first known as Eagle Brewery, a nod to which remains in its logo to this day. The original brewery in Pottsville, PA, burned down in 1831, and a new brewery was built on Mahantongo Street in Pottsville—the site of America's oldest brewery.
In 1873, Yuengling's son, Frederick, joined the business, and the company was renamed D.G. Yuengling & Son. Frederick took over the company after his father's death in 1877. He added a bottling line to the brewery, allowing the company to expand its offerings.
Yuengling faced its biggest challenge in 1919 with the ratification of the 18th Amendment, which prohibited alcohol. To survive, the company began producing "near beer" products with a low alcohol content of around 0.5%. They also constructed a dairy across from the brewery to expand their product offerings.
Prohibition ended in 1933, and Yuengling celebrated by brewing "Winner Beer" and shipping a truckload to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Yuengling has primarily been available in its home state of Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas. However, in 2020, The Yuengling Company was established as a joint venture with Molson Coors to expand beyond its existing 22-state footprint. The company now distributes to 26 states across the US, mostly east of the Mississippi River, with plans to continue expanding.
