What You'll Learn
Buckhorn Beer's history
Buckhorn Beer was first produced by the Lone Star Brewing Company. In the 1970s, the brand was acquired by Olympia Brewing, which was experiencing financial difficulties at the time. Olympia Brewing began selling Buckhorn as a low-end beer to improve its market share. During this period, Buckhorn was popular among laid-off loggers and mill workers in Ardenvoir.
Olympia Brewing was founded in 1896 by German immigrant Leopold Friederich Schmidt, in Tumwater, Washington. In 1983, the company was bought by G. Heileman Brewing Company, which was then purchased by Stroh Brewery Company in 1996. In 1999, most of the Stroh brands, including Olympia, were acquired by Pabst Brewing Company. The Tumwater brewery was closed in 2003.
In 2014, Pabst was purchased by beer industry veteran Eugene Kashper, and Olympia Beer was brewed under contract by MillerCoors. In 2021, Pabst Brewing Company announced that it was "temporarily pausing production" of Olympia Beer due to a lack of demand. Today, Olympia Beer is produced in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan by Great Western Brewing.
