The unique name "Dogbolter" comes from a fortunate mishap during the brewing process. David Bruce was distracted by a phone call, and by the time he returned, the original gravity (OG) of his brew had fallen from 1085° to 1068°. He then reduced the OG further to 1060°, creating a full-mash brew that was different from his original intention but turned out to be a stroke of genius.

It was originally brewed by David Bruce in 1979
Dogbolter beer was originally brewed by David Bruce in 1979 at The Goose and Firkin. It was subsequently brewed at his other Firkin Pubs. In 2014, Bruce collaborated with the West Berkshire Brewery (WBB) to recreate the original recipe, which has an OG of 1060° (6% ABV).
The first-ever brew of Dogbolter was the result of a fortunate mishap. While brewing his Earthstopper (OG 1075°), Bruce was distracted by a phone call. By the time he returned, the OG had fallen from 1085° to 1068°. He reduced the OG further to 1060°, inadvertently creating a stroke of genius.
To celebrate his feature in Boak and Bailey's book, *Brew Britannia: The Strange Rebirth of British Beer*, Bruce relaunched his original Dogbolter recipe. Will Twomey, head brewer at WBB, brewed 30 barrels of the strong ale, with 40 firkins and 6,000 commemorative bottles available nationally to pubs, wholesalers, and retailers.
Since the 2014 re-launch, it seems that Dogbolter is no longer being produced by the brewery. However, you can still purchase Gadds' Dogbolter Traditional Dark Porter from Waitrose & Partners and Ramsgate Brewery in Kent, England.
