As for popular Flying Dog beer products, one standout option is the "Doggie Style" ale. This American IPA has a pleasant malty sweetness with notes of caramel, fruit, bread, and butter cookies. It pairs well with creamy, fatty foods, Mexican and Thai cuisine, curry, wasabi, oily and spicy cheeses, and exotic fruits. With a refreshing, bright hop bitterness and hints of citrus, "Doggie Style" offers a well-rounded and flavourful drinking experience.
Another popular Flying Dog beer is the "Snake Dog" ale, which underwent a recipe modification in 2008. This ale is characterised by its herbaceous hop notes and enhanced varietal characteristics of Warrior and Columbus hops. The caramel malt used in the brewing process adds a unique touch, although the final taste is dominated by acute hop bitterness, rated at 60 IBU. "Snake Dog" is a medium-strength beer, typically ranging from 4.3% to 5.9% ABV.
While the above beers represent some of Flying Dog's notable offerings, the brewery produces a wide range of beers, including 10 annual grades and 13 seasonal varieties of organic lines, many of which have garnered awards in prestigious international beer competitions.

Flying Dog Brewery's history
Flying Dog Brewery was founded in 1990 by George Stranahan, a physicist with degrees from the California Institute of Technology and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Stranahan first ventured into the restaurant business in 1980 when he opened the Woody Creek Tavern in Woody Creek, Colorado. The tavern became well-known due to its association with journalist and local resident Hunter S. Thompson, who was a frequent patron and a close friend of Stranahan's.
In 1990, Stranahan opened the Flying Dog Brewpub in Aspen, Colorado, which was the first brewery to open in the area in over a century. The brewpub was an immediate success, attracting customers from near and far. To meet the growing demand for Flying Dog beers, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery in Denver, Colorado, in 1994, in a joint venture with Wynkoop Brewing Company. In 2000, Flying Dog purchased Wynkoop's interest in the brewery and expanded to a second location in Denver.
Looking to expand further, Flying Dog purchased the Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland, in 2006 and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. The company also acquired the Wild Goose brand, which it produced until December 2010 when it was sold to the Logan Shaw Brewing Company. In December 2007, Flying Dog decided to close the Denver brewery and focus its production solely in the Frederick facility, which had the capacity to brew 100,000 barrels of beer per year by 2015. The brewery was in the process of upgrading its facility to increase production to 700,000 barrels per year, but the expansion project was put on hold in October 2017 due to legislative issues.
The name and logo of Flying Dog Brewery were inspired by a painting that Stranahan and his friends saw during a trek in the Himalayas in 1983. Hanging in the Flashman Hotel in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, was a painting of a flying dog by a local artist, Fatima Jinnah. The painting depicted a classical Chinese Fawn Pug with wings, soaring over the Himalayan foothills. Jinnah's mythical portrayal of the pug evoked a sense of nostalgia for the prosperous trade that once flourished in central Asia before the Opium Wars and semi-colonialism of China.
Today, Flying Dog Brewery is available in several states across the US, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, and Maryland. The brewery has also expanded its international distribution to Western Europe.
