Sam Adams Triple Bock
The beer is known for its deep, full flavor with notes of maple, vanilla, oak, and toffee. Its rich mouthfeel has drawn comparisons to a vintage port, sherry, and cognac, and it is recommended to be enjoyed in a similar way. Sam Adams Triple Bock should be served at room temperature in a snifter, a few ounces at a time. Its warming malt character and fruit esters make it an ideal after-dinner aperitif.
The beer was brewed with two-row malted barley, water, Noble hops, yeast, and maple syrup. It was then aged for several months in oak whiskey barrels before bottling. At the time of its release, it was considered the world's strongest beer and a precursor to today's extreme beers, with an ABV of 15% or more.
The 1994 vintage is described as having reddish notes, fermented cherries, and medium dark chocolate flavors. It has been likened to a Port or Madeira wine, with a complex, sweet taste meant to be sipped and savored slowly. The 1995 vintage, on the other hand, is described as having a bright ruby edge with an opaque purplish-black color and a sweet prune juice taste.
The Sam Adams Triple Bock is a collector's item and a legendary beer that has aged remarkably well, with some reviewers claiming that bottles from 1994 and 1995 have held up quite well even after being previously opened and recorked.

German-style bock beers
Bock beers are traditionally associated with special occasions, especially religious festivals such as Christmas, Easter, or Lent. The beer has a long history of being brewed and consumed by Bavarian monks as a source of nutrition during times of fasting.
There are several substyles of bock beer, including Maibock (or Heller Bock), which is a paler, more hopped version made for spring festivals; Doppelbock (or Double Bock), a stronger and maltier version; Eisbock (Ice Bock), an even stronger version made by partially freezing the beer and removing the ice; and Weizenbock (Wheat Bock), a wheat beer made from 40 to 60% wheat.
Some commercial examples of traditional German-style bock beers include Aass Bock, Einbecker Ur-Bock Dunkel, Great Lakes Rockefeller Bock, Kneitinger Bock, New Glarus Uff-da Bock, and Penn Brewery St. Nikolaus Bock.

Doppelbock
You'll perceive notes of toasted barley, caramel, chocolate, toffee, plum and grape. For most variants of the style, the producers use German Noble hops and Pilsner, Vienna, Munich or CaraMunich malts. Doppelbock comes in fifty shades of gold and brown. The flavour is similar to dunkler bock, but with less alcohol.
The chocolate notes of dark doppelbock varieties pair well with chocolate desserts. Other varieties complement spicy Mexican dishes or savoury foods like game meats, pork and prosciutto. It also goes well with anything custard-based or a cheese plate with Swiss, Camembert or almost any aged cheese.
Some examples of Doppelbock include:
- Paulaner Salvator Doppel Bock
- Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock
- Einstok Icelandic Doppelbock
- Edmund's Oast Wolves at the Door Doppelbock
- Westbrook Low And Slow Doppelbock

Bock beer history
The style now known as Bock was first brewed in the 14th century in the Hanseatic town of Einbeck in Lower Saxony, Germany. Einbeck was a major trading centre in Germany and part of the Hanseatic trading league, which helped the beer gain popularity all around Europe. The beer produced in Einbeck was different from others at the time as they were a hop-growing region, while most beers were flavoured with herbal mixtures. The beer was delicate, only brewed in winter, and lagered for long periods.
In 1612, or 1617 according to another source, the Duke Maximillion I invited one of Einbeck's most respected brewers, Elias Pichler, to Munich. The processes used to make Munich's dark lager were combined with those of the Einbeck beer, and Bock beer was born. The name "Bock" comes from the citizens of Munich's Bavarian accent, which led them to pronounce "Einbeck" as "ein Bock" ("a billy goat"), and thus the beer became known as "Bock". A goat often appears on bottle labels.
Bock beer is historically associated with special occasions, particularly religious festivals such as Christmas, Easter, or Lent (Lentenbock). It has a long history of being brewed and consumed by Bavarian monks as a source of nutrition during times of fasting.
There are several substyles of Bock beer:
- Maibock (May Bock), a paler, more hopped version generally made for consumption at spring festivals.
- Doppelbock (Double Bock), a stronger and maltier version.
- Eisbock (Ice Bock), a much stronger version made by partially freezing the beer and removing the ice that forms.
- Weizenbock (Wheat Bock), a wheat beer made from 40 to 60% wheat.
