History of brewing at Harvey's
Harvey's Brewery is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex, England. It has been a family business since 1790, with five family members from the seventh and eighth generations working at the brewery today.
John Harvey started brewing in Bear Yard, Lewes, around 1820. At the time, there were five other breweries in the town. In 1838, John Harvey and his sons, Henry, Edwin and William, acquired the current Bridge Wharf Site, which included a coal wharf, timber yard and private dwellings. John Harvey added coal merchant to his business activities and built an eight-quarter brewhouse on the site.
By 1859, Henry Harvey was brewing Porters, Stouts and strong Mild Ales for distribution among 17 family-owned pubs, mostly located in the Eastbourne and Hailsham areas of Sussex. However, tragedy struck the Harvey family in the 1860s, with the deaths of John, Henry and Edwin Harvey in quick succession. This left William, who was not a brewer, to run the business. He hired Henry Titlow-Barrett from Wethereds Brewery in Marlow to take over beer production and went into business with his son-in-law, John Maxfield-Smith. Unfortunately, William also died unexpectedly in 1868.
The transition to the third and fourth generations of the family (the Harveys-Smiths) was not smooth, and the company went into a gradual decline that lasted for the next 60 years. During this period, the present Gothic Victorian brewery was built under the supervision of Titlow-Barrett, who had been hired by William Harvey. The design was by the famed brewery architect, William Bradford.
In the 1920s, the company was heavily mortgaged, and its pubs were in a poor state of repair. By the time of its incorporation in 1928, it was being run by three of John Maxfield-Smith's daughters: Alice, Elsie and Nora. These three sisters made two crucial appointments that ultimately led to the company's survival and long-term prosperity. Their nephew, Eric Rundle, joined the company, and a newly qualified young brewer called Anthony A. Jenner was hired. Over the next 40 years, these two men gradually took the firm out of debt, repaired the pubs, brewed award-winning beers and developed a respected reputation throughout the local community.
In the 1980s, Eric Rundle's daughters Audrey, Eileen and Joan took seats on the Harvey's Brewery Board, and Anthony Jenner's son Miles joined the brewing room. Audrey's son Hamish Elder, a seventh-generation descendant of John Harvey, joined the firm in 1989. Hamish Elder became Company Chairman in 2008 and is also Joint Managing Director with Miles Jenner, Harvey's Head Brewer.
