The Narragansett Brewing Company was founded in 1890 by six German immigrants—John H. Fehlberg, Augustus F. Borchandt, Herman G. Possner, George M. Gerhard, Constand A. Moeller, and Jacob Wirth—with $150,000 in capital. The company's original brewery was located in Cranston, Rhode Island, near the beach town that bears the brand's name. The first beer was brewed in December 1890, and the company officially incorporated the following year.

In its early years, the Narragansett Brewing Company experienced rapid growth. In 1891, the company produced nearly 28,000 barrels of beer, and by 1901, after 10 full years of production, that number had increased to 115,000 barrels. The company continued to expand, investing more than $4 million (roughly $109 million today) in its first 25 years of operation. By the end of 1910, the company had built a new bottling plant, boiler and engine rooms, two cold storage basements, stables, blacksmith and cooperage shops, and more.

In 1914, the Narragansett Brewing Company built the most modern bottling plant in the region, solidifying its position as the largest lager beer brewery in New England. The company's beer was known for its drinkability and was even prescribed by physicians to aid in various ailments. During Prohibition, the company released a line of sodas and continued to brew beer for medicinal purposes, as they had been granted permission by the IRS to do so.

Despite the Supreme Court finding in Falstaff's favor in 1973, the company never recovered.

In 1975, multi-millionaire Paul Kalmanovitz gained control of Falstaff, and soon after, the Narragansett Brewery asked the city of Cranston for tax relief, citing obsolete and overtaxed facilities. Despite being granted this relief, the brewery continued to struggle with increasing costs and competition from national brewing companies. On July 31, 1981, the company laid off 350 workers and ceased production at the Cranston brewery.
