New England Brewing Co. history
The history of the New England Brewing Co. began in 2001 when the New England Brewing of South Norwalk, CT closed its doors. Rob Leonard, the former head brewer, saw a nationwide surge in small breweries and decided to purchase the company name. In the fall of 2002, he signed a lease for a building on Selden Street in Woodbridge, Connecticut. A few months later, on June 4, 2003, a grand "tap party" was held at the first bar to ever purchase a New England Brewing keg, marking the official birthday of New England Brewing.
Early on, it was decided that New England Brewing beers would be available in cans. This presented a unique challenge, as it meant changing the mindset that associated cans with "bad, old man beer." In addition, the process of canning the beer by hand was labor-intensive and time-consuming. Despite these challenges, New England Brewing persevered and continued to expand its operations.
In 2006, the company introduced two new beers: Sea Hag IPA and Imperial Stout Trooper. This coincided with the recent passing of the Growler Law in Connecticut, which allowed breweries to sell their beer in jugs. As a result, a makeshift bar and tap system were set up in the brewery, and people began to visit to fill their growlers with New England Brewing beer.
As the business continued to grow, it became necessary to move to a larger space. In 2013, New England Brewing relocated to 175 Amity Road, just across the street from their previous location. The new space included a tasting room/growler station, allowing customers to come in and sample the beers on tap. The company also introduced a wider variety of beers, such as Coriolis, the Fat 10-er series, Locust Reign DIPA, New Hay IPA, Coconut Joy Porter, and Kewl Beans Coffee Oatmeal Stout.
The current Amity Road location is also home to the third New England Brewing dog, a German Shepherd named Mosely, who has a knack for sounding ferocious but is afraid of almost everything. Over the years, the company has continued to upgrade its brew house, increase fermentation tanks, and expand its beer offerings. Today, New England Brewing strives to become one of the best and most respected craft breweries in New England, guided by its core values of quality, integrity, staff happiness, community involvement, and industry collaboration.
