Sun King Brewing's history

Sun King Brewing, located in the Cole-Noble District of Indianapolis, Indiana, was founded in July 2009 by Dave Colt and Clay Robinson. Before Sun King, Colt and Robinson worked together at various brewpubs in Indianapolis. Colt worked at Circle V, and Robinson worked at Rock Bottom Brewery. The pair first met when Colt was the bar manager at Circle V, and Robinson was a student at Wabash College. They became friends a few years later when they both found themselves working in breweries in downtown Indianapolis.

In 2005, Colt and Robinson began brewing together at the Ram. Over the next three years, they brewed as many seasonal beers as possible while also keeping up with house beers. During this time, they earned three Great American Beer Festival medals, two Festival of Barrel Aged Beer medals, dozens of Indiana Brewer's Cup medals, and the 2007 Indiana Brewery of the Year title.

In July 2008, Robinson quit his job at the Ram and started planning to start his own business. He enlisted the help of his father, Omar, who had over 40 years of experience in food distribution, manufacturing, and sales. Together, they revised the business plan and consulted with attorney Steve Koers, a fan of Colt and Robinson's beers. Omar and Robinson then approached Andy Fagg, a frequent customer at Circle V, who signed on as a partner and helped organize a group of investors.

Sun King purchased equipment from a now-defunct brewery in Maine and relocated it to Indianapolis. In July 2009, the first kegs of beer were delivered, making Sun King the first full-scale production brewery in Indianapolis since the Indianapolis Brewing Company closed in 1948.

Sun King has since grown into the second-largest beer brewer in Indiana. The company is committed to handcrafted seasonal and specialty beers and has been rewarded with multiple medals at the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, and United States Beer Open competitions. In 2011, Sun King won eight medals at the Great American Beer Festival, including four gold medals. By 2011, they were producing 5,000 barrels of beer and had started selling outside of the metropolitan Indianapolis area, expanding to Bloomington, Indiana.

Sun King has three House Beers: Wee Mac Scottish Ale, Osiris Pale Ale, and Sunlight Cream Ale. They also brew a variety of specialty, limited, and seasonal beers, including Fistful of Hops, a quarterly series of four IPAs, each with a different variety of hops.
