Our Story

The Beer Nuts story began in Bloomington, Illinois, in the middle of the USA, where we discovered that people who drink beer are often hungry, and hungry people sometimes drink beer. So, we started selling our nuts in bars, taverns, and liquor stores, and they were a hit! We chose the name Beer Nuts, and the rest is history.

The shop sold various confectionery items, including a product called "Redskins"—slightly sweet, lightly salted glazed peanuts with their red skins intact.

In 1950, Arlo's brother, Russell Shirk, took over the business and began selling pre-packed "Shirk's Glazed Peanuts" in local liquor stores. He teamed up with Eldridge Brewster, a local potato chip and snack food distributor, and they rebranded the product as "Beer Nuts". Despite the product containing no beer, the name was chosen to appeal to drinkers in bars and taverns, and it quickly became a staple in these establishments.

By 1953, with the help of Brewster, Beer Nuts had expanded to become a national brand, and the trademark was registered. The product was available across all 50 states by the 1960s, and by the 1970s, the Shirk family was shipping 10 million pounds of Beer Nuts across the country. The company expanded its product line to include other nuts, such as cashews and almonds, as well as various snack mixes, gift baskets, and holiday-packaged items.

The Beer Nuts brand has successfully protected its trademark in court against competing brands that attempted to use similar names.
