August Schell Brewery
The August Schell Brewing Company, located in New Ulm, Minnesota, was founded by German immigrant August Schell in 1860. It is the second-oldest family-owned brewery in America and the oldest and largest brewery in Minnesota. The company celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010 with a two-day festival. Schell's also celebrates traditional German holidays such as Bock Fest and Oktoberfest.
August Schell himself was born in Durbach, Germany, in the Black Forest, in 1828. He studied as a machinist in Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1848. He settled in Cincinnati, where he worked for the Cincinnati Locomotive Works and met his future wife, Theresa. They moved to New Ulm in 1856, and August took a job in a flour mill. In 1860, he partnered with Jacob Bernhardt to found a brewery to serve the growing German immigrant population in the area. The brewery was located along the Cottonwood River, about two miles from the heart of New Ulm.
In 1866, August Schell bought out his partner, Jacob Bernhardt, to become the sole owner of the brewery. This began an unbroken chain of family ownership that continues today. During this time, the brewery grew in size and production. August Schell died in 1891, leaving the brewery to his wife, Theresa. Their son, Otto, took over as manager. Otto had studied brewing in Germany and modernised the brewery by adding refrigeration.
In 1902, the brewery became incorporated as the August Schell Brewing Company, and Otto Schell was named President. However, Theresa Schell retained ownership of the brewery and was named Vice-President.
The August Schell Brewing Company has continued to evolve and expand its offerings over the years. In 2002, the company made a significant investment by purchasing the Grain Belt Beer label, making Schell's the largest brewery in Minnesota in terms of production. In addition to serving as a production facility, the brewery grounds today house the historic Schell's mansion, a gift shop, a beer garden, and a white-tailed deer enclosure.
