Headlands beer in Berkeley
Headlands Brewing has two locations in California: one in Lafayette and the other in Northwest Berkeley, which opened in 2024. The Berkeley location is at 1280 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA 94706, and is open from Tuesday to Thursday, 12 pm–8 pm, Friday, 12 pm–9 pm, Saturday, 11 am–9 pm, and Sunday, 11 am–7:30 pm.
The Berkeley location is a beer garden, occupying the previous Westbrae Biergarten space, which was also a beer garden. The company was co-founded in 2013 by Phil Cutti and Patrick Horn, who are no longer involved in the business. Since CEO Austin Sharp took over in 2019, Headlands has opened a brewery in Pittsburg and a taproom in Lafayette.
The beer selection at Headlands is curated and brewed by Vice President of Operations and Head Brewer Ryan Frank, who co-founded Original Pattern Brewing Company in Oakland. Frank produces a wide range of lagers and India pale ales, or IPAs, under the Headlands brand. The brewery also serves beer from local breweries, wine, cider, and kombucha. The Berkeley location offers a similar menu to the Lafayette flagship taproom, with expanded preparation capabilities allowing for the inclusion of smash burgers, tacos, sausages, fries, salads, and sandwiches.
Headlands has a fun, relaxed brand image, which CEO Austin Sharp says is influenced by his childhood in New Zealand, where people love drinking beer outside. The company is committed to supporting local environmental organizations and nonprofits and is the only brewery in Northern California to partner with 1% for the Planet, an international organization in which certified partners commit to donating 1% of their revenue to environmental causes. Headlands also creates beers in partnership with local environmental organizations, such as the Golden Gate West Coast IPA, which donates one dollar for every four-pack sold to the Golden Gate National Park.
