The brewery's history
Mankato Brewery, located at 1119 Center Street North Mankato, started producing beers in 2012 and is the first production brewery in the community since 1967. The brewery is focused on creating authentic beers that reflect the heritage of the region and its people.
The history of brewing in Mankato dates back to the 19th century when German immigrants brought their brewing culture to the city. In 1842, the lagering technique was crafted in the city of Pilsen, Austria, creating a clear, golden beer that required storage in cold caves for several months. This type of beer appealed to the German immigrants settling in the United States during the latter half of the 19th century.
The first brewery in Mankato was founded by William Bierbauer and his brother, Jacob, who had fled Germany's 1848 revolutions. The Bierbauer Brewing Company was the first brewery built west of St. Paul, Minnesota, and played a significant role in the early history of Mankato. During the Dakota Sioux Uprising, William Bierbauer was appointed captain of the Mankato Militia and helped end the assault on nearby New Ulm, home to Schell's Brewing Company. The Bierbauer Brewing Company bought out other breweries and operated until the Prohibition Amendment in 1919, which made the production, distribution, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages illegal.
After Prohibition, the brewery changed hands and was renamed the Kato Brewery in 1933. However, financial difficulties forced the Kato Brewery, later known as the Mankato Brewing Company, to close its doors in 1967. The site of the brewery was sold at a public auction in 1970, and the buildings were razed, removing a large part of Mankato's brewing history.
Today, Mankato Brewery carries on the brewing tradition in the city, offering a range of craft beers that reflect the local flavour and heritage of the region.
