G. Heileman Brewing Company
The G. Heileman Brewing Company was a brewer that operated from 1858 to 1996 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It was founded by Gottlieb Heileman, an immigrant from Württemberg, who joined forces with John Gund, an immigrant from Baden. Together, they founded The City Brewery in La Crosse, which produced beer for local hotels and bars. In 1872, the pair had a falling out due to differing expansion goals, leading to Gund buying Heileman's shares of the International Hotel and Heileman purchasing Gund's shares of the City Brewery.
Following the split, Heileman renamed the business G. Heileman's City Brewery and continued to operate as a local brewery. After Heileman's death in 1878, ownership passed to his widow, Johanna Heileman, who became one of the first female CEOs in the United States. With the help of her brother-in-law and son-in-law, Emil T. Mueller, Johanna expanded the business, and in 1890, they incorporated the company as the G. Heileman Brewing Company.
In the early 1900s, the company developed its historic Old Style Brand, and by 1902, they were producing around 160,000 barrels of Old Style Lager. However, Prohibition in 1920 forced Heileman to discontinue this lager and pivot to near-beer and other products like soda beverages and malt tonics. The company struggled during this period but survived, resuming beer production after Prohibition.
In the post-Prohibition era, the Heileman family sold their shares to the Paul Davis Company of Chicago, and the business was formalized as The G. Heileman Brewing Company Incorporated. The company continued to expand, introducing new brands and increasing production. By the 1980s, Heileman had become the third-largest brewing company in the US, behind Anheuser-Busch and Miller Brewing.
However, Heileman faced challenges in the late 1980s when Australia-based corporate raider Alan Bond initiated a hostile leveraged buyout, which ultimately led to the company's bankruptcy in 1991. The company was sold multiple times in the following years, and in 1999, the La Crosse brewery, home to Heileman operations for over a century, closed its doors.
Today, the G. Heileman Brewing Company remains defunct, but its legacy lives on. The City Brewing Company, which purchased the flagship brewery in La Crosse, continues to brew beers like Old Style under contract, honoring the long and proud brewing history of the G. Heileman Brewing Company.
