3 Stars Brewing Company's history
3 Stars Brewing Company was a brewery based in Washington, DC, that began production in 2012. The company was founded by longtime friends Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey, two homebrewers who wanted to bring locally handcrafted artisanal ales to the DC beer community. The name 3 Stars comes from the three stars on the DC flag, which in turn copies the Washington family coat of arms. The brewery was located in an industrial section of NW DC in Takoma, where they produced a wide range of creative beers. In addition to their brewing operations, they also had a homebrewers' supply store and an indoor bar where customers could relax and enjoy their beers. They promoted local businesses and often had DC food trucks outside their brewery.
3 Stars Brewing Company issued their first cans in 2015, starting with their Ghost White IPA and Citra Lemon Saison. Prior to this, Coleman had expressed his preference for bottling over canning, stating that he didn't think their beers were meant for canning. However, they changed their minds and began to offer their beers in both cans and bottles, with can options in 12 oz and 16 oz sizes. Many of their early cans were short releases available only at the brewery, though some have been reissued at different times. In August 2017, they released three new cans for their 5th anniversary, and the following month, they released another 12 oz can in collaboration with a local restaurant, Mike Isabella Concepts.
The brewery also had a taproom that was open Wednesday through Sunday, with online ordering and pick-up options available. They collaborated with various breweries on different beers, including Aslin Beer Company, Oclot Brewing, J. Wakefield Brewing, Other Half Brewing, Finback Brewing of New York City, Interboro NYC, and Captain Lawrence in Elmsford, New York. Unfortunately, as of July 10, 2022, 3 Stars Brewing Company is no longer in business.

3 Stars Brewing Company's beer reviews
3 Stars Brewing Company was one of Washington D.C.'s oldest production breweries, founded by longtime friends Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey. Unfortunately, the company is no longer in business, having announced its sudden closure in July 2023, citing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company was known for its artisanal ales, with a focus on high-quality, funky beers with wild yeast. They were particularly well-known for their Peppercorn Saison, a Belgian-style ale with a slightly sweet, fruity nose and hints of grass and coriander. The Southern Belle was another popular brew, a brown ale with roasted pecans and an 8.7% ABV.
Reviews of their beers are generally positive, with customers praising the unique and complex flavours offered by 3 Stars Brewing Company. The Peppercorn Saison is described as having a "yeasty, mildly funky aroma" with notes of citrus, bananas, bubblegum, and caramel, as well as a "smooth underlying bitterness". The Southern Belle is said to have deep, rich malt flavours with subtle hints of roasted coffee.
Other notable beers from the company include the Starsky and Brunch, a sweet stout with chocolate and maple syrup, coffee, and waffle flavours, and the Pandemic Porter, with lingering chocolate and coffee flavours and smooth malt sweetness. Their Citra Lemon Peel Saison is bright and refreshing, with subtle citrus notes and a touch of tartness.
Despite the overall positive reception to their beers, 3 Stars Brewing Company faced challenges during the pandemic, including a reduction in on-site foot traffic and increased competition from other local breweries distributing their beers. These factors, combined with the high costs of ingredients and other expenses, ultimately contributed to the company's closure.
